Well. I could probably tell you more if we two were drinking coffee/beer somewhere :) But here you go.

  1. I have no idea about Google Munich salary, but I guess, Intel is kind of average pay.
  2. The lab has several main branches of research: drones, simulation, autonomous driving, RL. But you are mostly free to do almost anything, I would say. And no, no connection to the specific product or like this. Vladlen positions the lab as doing basic research and it is really so.
  3. Yes and no. Yes: Intel cares, buys new GPUs, hires more people.
No: I don`t expect it to grow any close to Google AI size. Just open http://vladlen.info/lab/ and count # of permanent +postdocs. Then open https://research.fb.com/people/?cat=4 and count there. CV & ML is just one among the many Intel research interests.
  4. See 3. Personally, I would add that given the equivalently good proposition, I would always select Berlin over the Munich regardless of the company. See also 6.
  5. Nobody counts your work hours. People have families, do vacations, etc. The only long hour time is the CVPR and NeurIPS deadline. As anywhere who doing research, I would say.
But you are asking intern :) Probably better to ask Ozan or Rene, or Alexey about this.
  6. “Not asking about Munich as a place to live.” I will answer anyway. Finding a place to live is terrible. Terrible. I really hate this “casting” of 40+ potential tenants, which landlords make. It insults me a lot. That is why, I would probably not select Munich or Germany, regardless of the company, if I had a choice.
    The rest is fine.
